On November 5th, the National Medical Association (NMA) released a statement outlining its priorities for policymakers following the 2026 midterm elections. The nation’s largest and oldest medical organization representing Black physicians called on newly elected leaders to protect access to quality healthcare, address health disparities, and strengthen the country’s physician workforce.
“The decisions made in the coming months will have significant implications for the health and well-being of millions of Americans, particularly those in historically underserved communities,” the statement read.
The statement, issued by NMA President Dr. Brandi Kaye Freeman, also recognized several historic election milestones, including the election of five Black governors:
The NMA also congratulated the physicians elected to federal office, including Dr. Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan and Dr. Annie Andrews of South Carolina.
“These achievements reflect important progress in representation and demonstrate the value of bringing diverse experiences and clinical expertise to public leadership,” the statement read. “We look forward to engaging these leaders, and all newly elected officials, in advancing policies that improve health for every community.”
Looking ahead, the NMA said it is committed to working with the elected leaders who prioritize the health and well-being of all Americans while advancing policies that promote health equity and improve outcomes in underserved communities.
