OP-ED: Black Health Equity Is at Risk—and We Must Respond Now

health equity

We’re wrapping up National Minority Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the health disparities affecting racial and ethnic minority communities and promoting health equity. But when it comes to the health of Black Americans, the reality remains grim. Black Americans continue to face worse health outcomes and die at significantly higher rates from nearly every chronic disease — diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and asthma. These aren’t just numbers; they’re a call to action.

For a while, it felt like we were making progress toward health equity. But lately, it seems like that progress is slipping away.

As healthcare providers working in Black communities, we’ve often pointed to social determinants of health as the root cause of these disparities. These are non-medical factors like access to primary care, health insurance, economic stability, education, social support, and neighborhood conditions. While this explanation has helped dispel outdated and harmful ideas about genetic differences, it doesn’t solve the deeper issues of individual and systemic bias that Black Americans face when they enter the healthcare system.

The truth is, addressing social determinants of health will take time — likely a long time. And if we don’t also work to change attitudes and confront bias, too many Black lives will continue to be lost. Just look at the ongoing crisis of Black maternal mortality in America.

This is where platforms and organizations such as BlackDoctor Pro and the African American Wellness Project (AAWP), as well as primary care doctors, play a critical role. We need to provide more information, guidance, and support than ever before.

But here’s the hard question: Can doctors rise to the challenge in a system that’s already stretched to its limits? It’s a question we have to face because the stakes couldn’t be higher.

Black patients are counting on us, and we have to find the strength and resources to meet their needs—even as the healthcare system feels like it’s crumbling around us.
