A new study improves prediction of incident breast cancer risk among Black women by adding a polygenic risk score (PRS). A PRS is a single number that estimates an individual’s genetic predisposition to a specific trait or common disease by adding the weighted effects of thousands of genetic variants across the genome.
The study found that adding a PRS to the usual questionnaire-based risk factors improved breast cancer risk prediction for U.S. Black women.
The study shows that adding polygenic screening could help physicians identify risk earlier and make more informed decisions, especially for Black women who have often been underserved by older risk assessment models. However, coverage remains inconsistent. Right now, polygenic risk score testing for breast cancer is not part of standard routine care in the U.S., so insurance coverage can be limited and often varies by plan or clinical circumstance.
