Disparities in the Setting of Initial Dementia Diagnosis: Influence of Race, Ethnicity, and Primary Care Use

dementia

This study looked at where older adults were first diagnosed with dementia and whether race, ethnicity, and primary care visits made a difference. Researchers found that Black adults were less likely than white adults to be diagnosed in a community setting, such as a doctor’s office, if they had not recently seen a primary care provider.

However, people who had a recent primary care visit were more likely to receive an earlier diagnosis in a community setting. Primary care visits also reduced the difference in diagnosis rates between Black and White patients.

Why Is This Important?

Regular primary care visits can help people get diagnosed with dementia earlier, before they need emergency or hospital care. Improving access to primary care may reduce racial disparities and help patients receive treatment and support sooner.
