A database review recently demonstrated a high prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in hospitalized African American obese patients. When they were treated appropriately, it improved overall survival rates. 

Why You Might Read This Article. In my experience, African Americans are not aware of the dangers of a combination of obesity and sleep apnea. Snoring is something that goes “along with the territory”. This data was collected on sleep apnea in patients who happened to be African American, and obese. Treated appropriately, increased survival rates. I believe we can do more to increase awareness of the dangers of sleep apnea in our communities and that snoring may be signaling a potentially dangerous outcome.
