March 20th is National Match Day — a pivotal day in U.S. medical education when graduating fourth-year students learn where they will train as residents through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The day marks the culmination of Match Week, when students find out if they secured a residency position and where they will begin the next phase of their training.
This milestone represents the transition from medical school to residency, where new physicians will spend the next three to seven years refining their skills and deepening their expertise in their chosen specialties. Years of intensive training and sacrifice have led to this moment — and to the next step in their journey to becoming physicians.
As a clinician, you likely remember what it felt like to open the envelope revealing where you would spend the next several years of your career. It’s an overwhelming, yet exciting experience that stays with you long after the day has passed.
Today, we celebrate the next generation of physicians committed to advancing the health of their communities. Congrats to all who secured a residency program today.
