How Ambient AI Could Ease Physician Burnout

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare, and one emerging tool may help address pervasive problems in medicine: physician burnout.  Ambient AI automatically captures and summarizes patient visits, which eliminates administrative tasks. This technology allows clinicians to focus more on the actual patient experience. While the concept sounds promising, experts suggest hospitals approach cautiously and thoughtfully.

A 2024 study published in JAMA Network found that most physicians struggle with work-life balance, with much of their work occurring between appointments. They’ve claimed that work has caused “a constant experience of time scarcity.” With that in mind, we need a way to free up doctors or a more efficient way to work with patients.

Physicians today spend a significant amount of time documenting patient care in electronic health record (EHR) systems. Tasks such as navigating records, writing clinical notes, coding encounters, and completing documentation often extend well beyond office hours. Many clinicians refer to this after-hours charting as “pajama time,” a term that underscores the toll administrative work can take on work-life balance.

Ambient AI tools aim to change that.

What Ambient AI Does

Ambient AI systems “eavesdrop” on conversations between clinicians and patients during appointments, and then automatically generate a clinical note. Physicians can then review and edit the note before it is added to the patient’s record.

This process eliminates the need for physicians to manually document every detail of a patient encounter, essentially freeing them to spend more time engaging directly with patients.

Early Evidence Shows Meaningful Time Savings

Research suggests that ambient AI could significantly cut down the time clinicians spend on electronic health records.

In the study from the University of Chicago, physicians who used the technology spent 8.5 percent less time overall in the EHR system. The time they spent writing clinical notes dropped by more than 15 percent, showing that AI tools may help streamline one of the most time-consuming parts of a doctor’s day.

Even small reductions can add up. If a physician saves just a few minutes per patient and sees about 20 patients a day, that could mean hours saved over the course of a week.

Some health systems are already seeing those gains. In a study published in NEJM Catalyst, The Permanente Medical Group studied ambient AI use across more than 2.5 million patient visits between 2023 and 2024. They found the technology saved doctors an estimated 15,791 hours of documentation time, which equals about 1,800 eight-hour workdays.

Doctors reported other benefits as well. About 84 percent said communication with patients improved, and 82 percent said their job satisfaction increased. More than half of patients also said their visit felt better when doctors used the technology.

Adoption is Accelerating

Experts estimate that about one-third of healthcare providers currently have access to some form of ambient AI technology, and adoption is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.

For many organizations, the technology has become part of a broader effort to improve physician retention and job satisfaction. Recruiting and replacing physicians is costly, and hospital leaders increasingly view digital tools that reduce administrative burdens as a worthwhile investment.

Several companies have entered the market with ambient AI documentation tools. One of the most prominent is Abridge, which has secured contracts with more than 150 health systems nationwide, including Sharp HealthCare, MaineHealth, and Samaritan Health Services.

Executives at Samaritan Health Services say the technology has allowed clinicians to spend less time on documentation and more time with patients. In some cases, organizations have even reported measurable financial returns from improved efficiency and documentation practices.

Important Limitations Remain

Despite the excitement around ambient AI, experts caution that the technology is not a complete solution to documentation challenges.

Physicians remain responsible for verifying the accuracy of AI-generated notes. That means clinicians may spend time editing and reviewing documentation rather than writing it themselves. While this still reduces administrative burden, it does not eliminate it.

Healthcare leaders are also encouraged to monitor performance closely before and after implementation. Tracking metrics such as documentation time, insurer denial rates, and clinical workflow changes can help organizations identify unintended consequences.

Another potential risk involves compliance and documentation accuracy. Because AI-generated notes may rely on repetitive patterns, errors or inconsistencies could be replicated across multiple records if clinicians do not carefully review them.

In addition, ambient documentation tools may bypass some traditional EHR prompts and alerts that guide clinical decision-making. Without those reminders, clinicians could potentially miss important steps such as medication monitoring or condition updates.

A Promising (And Still Evolving) Technology

Despite these challenges, many experts believe ambient AI is a promising application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. By reducing the administrative burden associated with electronic documentation, the technology could help physicians reclaim time, improve patient interactions, and reduce burnout.

Still, successful adoption will require careful implementation, ongoing monitoring, and realistic expectations about what AI can and cannot do.

For healthcare leaders, the key takeaway is clear: ambient AI may not eliminate documentation, but it could fundamentally reshape how clinicians manage it and how much time they can devote to the people who matter most: their patients.
